When is the best time to see penguins on Magdalena Island?

November and December are the best months: penguins are ashore incubating eggs and weather is more stable. Season runs October to March.

Can you touch the penguins?

No. There is a marked path and visitors must keep their distance. Penguins approach humans freely, but must not be touched.

How long is the boat ride to Magdalena Island?

Approximately 2 hours from Punta Arenas. The full excursion (return journey + time on the island) lasts ~5 hours.

Magdalena Island is home to more than 120,000 Magellanic penguin breeding pairs one of the largest colonies in the world. Declared a Natural Monument, it is accessed by navigation through the Strait of Magellan. Between October and March, penguins are ashore incubating eggs or raising chicks.
